Tinitell launched in August 2016 to help parents stay in touch with their children while they’re on the go. It’s now used in 98 countries worldwide. Since the typical Tinitell user is 5 to 9 years old, parents needed a device that could deliver location accuracy at a lower cost than traditional smartphones. To build the ideal service, Tinitell needed a mapping platform that could deliver precise maps and location accuracy outside as well as indoors, where geolocation is more challenging.
Tinitell uses the Google Maps Geolocation API to determine the location of children wearing its devices and to display it on parents’ smartphones. When parents open the Tinitell app, their child’s location is displayed with a ringed pin drop on a Google Map. Before using Google Maps, in certain circumstances like indoors, Tinitell could achieve a location accuracy of up to 1-2 miles. This degree of accuracy was insufficient for parents, many of whom live in cities where an accuracy of 1 mile would not indicate their child’s precise location. With Google Maps, Tinitell improved its location accuracy to 2500 feet at worst and 3 feet at best. This enables parents to quickly and confidently know where their child is, whether they’re at school, in a crowded area, or exploring on vacation.
